Protect Your Home From Summer Plumbing Problems

by Kent George

Summer is almost here! At this time of year, many homeowners celebrate with barbecues and outdoor parties. For people with families, summer is a time when kids stay at home. This change in activity can lead to some common plumbing problems. The following tips will help you avoid plumbing issues so your household can function more smoothly.

Prevent Clogs in the Toilet

With kids and visitors in and out of your bathrooms, your toilet will see a lot more use throughout the day. To protect your toilet from clogs, switch to a thinner toilet paper that will crumple into a small wad in your pipes, and place your bathroom's garbage can in plain view for anyone who might need to throw something away while using your facilities. This will discourage the people using your toilet from flushing items like tampons. You may even consider posting a humorous sign near your toilet encouraging visitors to flush only human waste.

Protect the Garbage Disposal

Your home's garbage disposal can get heavy use during outdoor barbecues and summer parties. Before this time comes, get your garbage disposal ready by sharpening the blades. To do this, put several cups of ice into the unit, then sprinkle the ice with coarse sea salt. Run the disposal with the ice inside. Do this a few times in the weeks leading up to summer so your garbage disposal will be ready for the big meals to come.

During the parties themselves, remember that not all foods should go down into the unit. Fruit rinds, fibrous vegetables like celery, and animal bones can all cause your garbage disposal to break down in time. Keep an eye on the guests who help you clean up from events, as well. Anyone who uses the garbage disposal should be aware of the rules before flushing anything away.

Stop Hose Leaks Behind the Washing Machine

You may find yourself doing a lot more laundry than usual with the kids at home running through the sprinkler, dirtying up towels and swim suits. Small water leaks at the back of the washing machine are a common problem that can become much more noticeable when the washing machine gets heavy use. Check the back of your washing machine for leaks. If you find evidence of a leak, tighten the hose connection if it's loose. If this doesn't fix the problem, replace the hose with one made from steel mesh.

Keep the Number for Plumbing Repair Handy

Keep the phone number for plumbing repairs posted somewhere on your refrigerator or in your kitchen at home. Be sure to note the phone number for emergency repair, should the plumbing problem occur over a weekend or over the 4th of July. This way, you'll always be prepared for potential plumbing problems, and you'll know what to do in the event that they occur.
